Best Accessories for Reading Outdoors

Whether you’re packing a book to read the sleeping bag at night, to pass the time in the tent while riding out a storm, or maybe just a quick trip to quieter place, reading in the outdoors can be made much easier with a few accessories. Below is our list of the best accessories for reading outdoors. As always, if you think you have something to add, feel free to comment below!

Kindle Paperwhite

This is the best accessory for reading outdoors. Normally I prefer physical books to the digital alternative. There’s just nothing like holding the physical weight of the book and working your way through the pages. That said, I LOVE using a Kindle Paperwhite while outdoors. They are glare resistant, which is fantastic for bright sunny days, and they are water-resistant (unlike books). Also, you can easily adjust the warmth and brightness of the screen, so you can read while the rest of the tent is trying to sleep.

Clip-on Reading Lamp

This is a must. If you’ve ever tried to read by flashlight, you know how important this gadget is to the outdoor reader. Yes, you can read by the lantern, but you have to sit right beside it and isn’t conducive to reading while others are trying to sleep. I recommend a rechargeable version, like this one, so you don’t have to pack batteries. But you can also go with the battery version if you’re already packing batteries.

Water-resistant Book Cover

If you are going to pack a hard-copy book into the backwoods, I recommend a case like this one. The main benefit of the case is helping prevent ruin if you get water into your pack. Unlike your clothes, that book is not going to be fine once you hang it on a limb to dry. On top of that, you’ll keep pages from getting smashed (a pet peeve of mine). While you’re at it, you can also get a cover for your notebook.

Page Holder

If you need to keep one hand free to grab that fire-side drink, this the gadget for you. It’s such a simple little tool, that you’ll be angered at yourself for not being its inventor. This things allow you to easily hold your book (even in the wind) without having to have both hands on the book and without the pages blowing around. They’re cheap and handy.

Solar-Powered Battery Charger

This isn’t directly used on a book, but it made the list of the best accessories for reading outdoors because of its usefulness in powering two other things on the list. If you bring a Kindle Paperwhite, this is perfect for keeping it charged, and those two things are all you need to read as many books as you can while on your trip. But even if you pack books, this is perfect for powering your clip-on lamp, rechargeable headlamp, or any other electronic that needs to be charged while you get some reading done.
